What is a Natural Antibiotic for a Stye?

I'm not a super fan of antibiotics, but if there is a stye (aka hordeolum) – antibiotics is my go to to ensure healing and safety. Some of my patients do not want to use antibiotics for personal or religious reasons. Today, I'll discuss what natural "antibiotics" can help with a stye and explore evidence-based options alongside proper eye care practices.

Traditional Antibiotics

Typical and commonly prescribed antibiotics for stye (versus chalazion) care can be erythromycin, penicillin, ciprofloxacin, and tobramycin to name a few. The antibiotic is chosen case by case and of course, allergy to an antibiotic must be verified before prescribing.

Natural Options with "Antibiotic" Properties:

  • Honey:
    • Manuka honey in particular has natural antibacterial properties that can help reduce inflammation and fight infection.
  • Tea Tree Oil:
    • Diluted tea tree oil is known for its antimicrobial effects. However, it must be used with caution as it can be irritating if not properly diluted.
  • Aloe Vera:
    • Aloe vera has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties that may help calm irritation and support healing.
  • ACV:
    • Apple Cider Vinegar has a very low pH and thought to kill bacteria. It can also cause a chemical burn, so be super careful.

Important Considerations

When using natural remedies for a stye, keep these tips in mind:

  • Always Dilute: Essential oils like tea tree oil must be severely diluted with a carrier oil to prevent irritation.
  • Test for Sensitivity: Always perform a patch test to ensure you don't have an allergic reaction.
  • Consult a Professional: Natural remedies can complement treatment, but they should not replace your optometrist, especially if the stye worsens.
  • Maintain Eyelid Hygiene: Cleanse your eyelids daily and avoid touching your eyes to prevent delay in healing or additional infection.

Preseptal Cellulitis

Don't spend another second with home remedies if your eyelid gets red in color, feels warm/hot to the touch, and/or there is pain AND if these things have increased in the past 12 hours - PRESEPTAL CELLULITIS is a real, real concern. Preseptal cellulitis can be vision threatening. Also, remember your eyes are close to the sinuses and your sinuses are close to the brain. Untreated preseptal cellulitis can become ORBITAL CELLULITS which is life threatening and requires IV antibiotics and hospitalization.
